Owners’ Dreams Defined: The Horizon FD102 Takes Shape

NEWS | June 12, 2019

With the marrying of the hull and superstructure of a new yacht build comes what many owners consider the “fun part” of the project: visualizing the interior space and selecting the décor package for their dream yacht.

At the expansive Horizon Yachts facility situated in the bustling city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, clients are invited to tour their yacht during the build process and sit down with the Horizon Design Team to select everything from stonework and soft goods to drawer pulls and china.

The owners of the new FD102 Hull Two accepted such an invitation recently, traveling to Taiwan and Kaohsiung for the first time to see their new yacht in build. This is the first Horizon build for the experienced American owners, who had worked with Cor D. Rover on the design of their previous yacht and were drawn to the styling and volume of the FD Series.

During the three-day visit, the owners toured the Horizon Yachts facilities, seeing the yard’s impressive 5-axis router firsthand and stepping aboard other yachts in build including the FD87 Hulls 10, 11, and 12, FD77 Hull Three, and FD102 Hull One. They also visited Horizon’s state-of-the-art Atech facility, which specializes in producing advanced composites materials not only for Horizon yachts but also for a variety of other high-tech industries from railway to wind power.

In preparation for the visit, the build team on the Horizon FD102 Hull Two constructed a full-scale interior replica that included mock-ups of key furniture pieces for the owners to experience a true walk-through of their vessel. This ability, remarked the owners, allowed them to feel the spaciousness afforded by the FD102’s 24’ beam and make informed decisions about the layout of the main guest areas of their new yacht as well as the type and positioning of the yacht’s equipment.

The majority of the owners’ visit was spent in the beautiful Horizon Yachts Design Center, where the owners collaborated with the Horizon build and design team during a complete review of the yacht’s interior décor package. The Design Center houses an impressive selection of samples – from wood to stone to fabric and more – so that during this face-to-face meeting the owners were comfortably able to determine their wood selections, stonework, furniture style and unique interior design concepts. They also reviewed the soft good selections to give preliminary thoughts on décor and color schemes.

Visiting the yard during the build process and meeting the craftsmen, naval architects, and designers who lend their exceptional talents to each unique Horizon yacht is one of the many important aspects of becoming a Horizon owner, and the owners of the latest FD102 report that they not only enjoyed the yard’s hospitality, but also felt that their input and yachting knowledge was welcomed into the build process. Horizon is proud to welcome these new owners to the extended and growing Horizon yachting family.
