With nearly 70 hulls breaking out of the Horizon Fast Displacement (FD) Series model’s mold since the series’ introduction in 2016, the FD Series has proven itself an extremely successful design in multiple markets.

Customization is a cornerstone of the Horizon Yachts philosophy, and the company proudly employs a talented engineering team to consider advanced customization requests – many of which are first-time features aboard current models. Each Horizon yacht is built upon a proven platform that has been rigorously tank tested, engineered and built using the most advanced composite construction methods. Upon this platform a client can consider a variety of layouts, often taking advantage of design and engineering ingenuities that were put into place through the customizations of other Horizon owners.

The examples span the spectrum of creativity. One owner desired a yacht that would be custom designed for onboard entertainment. Horizon responded with an FD75 boasting a truly unique layout. The space normally occupied by the on-deck master stateroom was built as a Karaoke room with disco lighting. A full DJ booth and smoke machines were incorporated on the open flybridge. Onboard dining was another area of focus, and Horizon incorporated multiple tables with integrated hot pots.Image 7038: 2204

Image 7039: 3172Another owner desired a high-tech yacht, and Horizon built a Smart FD90 featuring the JUNG automation system, which allows control of the lighting, audio, window treatments and A/C via phone or iPad devices. Horizon built another FD80 fitted with Garmin Surround View six-camera “Birdseye” system, and a customized ergonomic helm design that includes three 22” Garmin displays as well as the Maretron monitoring and Octoplex control systems. Helm stations and technology integrations are tailored to ensure the client has the resources and products needed.Image 7040: 4125

Image 7042: 6160Chefs and bartenders are catered for as well, with customizable galley amenities, myriad options for outdoor BBQ stations and bar areas and, as in the case of one customized FD90, integrated kegerators on each deck. Fishing enthusiasts receive no less special treatment. Horizon is in the process of building the first FD Series yacht (an FD80) with an aft fishing cockpit! The first-time Horizon owner from New Zealand specified a custom designed fishing cockpit for the ultimate offshore experience.Image 7043: 7168

Image 7044: 8129Expert engineering is required to achieve a high level of customization and layout flexibility while maintaining the volume and innovative features that define the FD Series. One owner requested his FD85 yacht be built with a helipad to easily accommodate guests traveling to and from the yacht. To facilitate this request, Horizon constructed a carbon fiber bridge hardtop to meet the structural strength required for the helipad.Image 7045: 9152This experience set the precedent for Horizon’s engineering team to customize an FD80 for another owner with a touch-and-go helipad on the boat deck. This was the first time the feature had been engineered for this model, with the entire aft portion of the boat deck dedicated to the yacht’s helipad. The yard also engineered a hydraulic, folding hardtop overhang for this yacht to allow for rotor blade clearanceImage 7046: 10154

Image 7047: 11138The spacious interior of the FD Series design allows for a variety of layout configurations, such as galley forward or aft, open or enclosed bridge, and various cabin and multi-use space configurations on the lower decks. Aboard an FD102 and a recent FD110, the owners requested an asymmetric skylounge designed to be made private from the wheelhouse or open as desired. The first customized FD yacht with dedicated gym facilities is on its way.Image 7048: 12126

Image 7049: 13120The crew areas also receive special consideration with the FD Series. While the traditional FD Series layout positions the crew quarters aft, some owners have opted to build their FD Series yacht with full crew quarters forward. This layout allows for a large crew mess as well as private access to both the guest accommodations and the main-deck galley.Image 7050: 14124Of course, every owner has a unique intention of use, and Horizon is capable of building the yachts to class regulations and to market standards as necessary. Recent FD builds intended for the Australian market, for example, have been constructed to meet AS/NZA power standards as well as AMSA 2C Survey requirements for charter.

What’s next for the FD Series? The combination of a well-designed and well-built product, plus Horizon’s willingness to invest in engineering and design and to execute customization requests, results in yachts that are the perfect fit for their owners.
