In Part One of our safety series, we introduced the ways in which Horizon incorporates what we call “safety by design” – these are not only items that can be seen with the eye, such as high bulwarks and heavy-duty railings, but important features built into our yachts from the beginning, such as our VARTM resin infusion process. In this second part, we introduce the various safety systems utilized on board as well as the safety testing each Horizon yacht undergoes, all of which allows our owners to enjoy safe, comfortable cruising.

* Electrical Safety

Horizon’s electrical system combines function and safety; the shorepower supply is initially passed through an auto ISO boost transformer. This not only isolates the yacht from any potential shore-side problems but also regulates the voltage entering the yacht, automatically reducing or increasing voltage to remove the possibility of equipment damage caused by power spikes. All wiring is color-coded and labeled to simplify trouble-shooting, and the power cables used on board are LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) cables which carry approval from the major marine classification associations, including LR (Lloyd's Register), DNV (Det Norske Veritas), ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), BV (Bureau Veritas), USCG (United States Coast Guard). Circuit breakers and ground fault circuit interrupters are utilized for water heaters and receptacles in the head, galley, GFCI, E/R (Engine Room), and on exterior areas; magnetic breakers are used exclusively. All installations are done in accordance with safety standards and incorporate the most up-to-date equipment available.

* Redundant Systems

Equipment redundancy also plays a large role in safety at sea. An example of Horizon’s safety by redundancy is our use of double or triple Racor fuel filters, each valved to operate individually or in series. This redundant filtration minimizes the possibility of losing an engine to contaminated fuel. The same philosophy guides the standard dual “live” PTO hydraulic systems for the optional stabilizers and bow thruster; this system is driven simultaneously by each engine gearbox. If one engine shuts down, this operating system allows the thruster and stabilizers to remain fully powered without having to turn any valves. Knowing the bow thruster will continue to operate seamlessly is a relief to any helmsman. While some of the above may be considered conveniences rather than safety features, others such as the standard duel fresh water pumps or the dual raw water intake pumps for the air conditioners will allow these systems to keep functioning – and allow you to keep boating — even if one of the pumps fails.

* Safety Testing

Upon completion, every Horizon yacht must pass a series of strict safety tests to guarantee the yacht is ready for delivery. Our leak test simulates weather conditions that occur during a monsoon and uses thousands of gallons of water to heavily shower the yacht at various angles for 2-4 hours; our experienced team examines the entire yacht during this process, carefully checking for any leaks or areas of water intrusion. This testing process is extremely important in ensuring the yacht is fully sealed off from outside water sources, which can cause damage or become a safety issue when underway.

Horizon examines the gear loading of tenders to ensure smooth operation as well as checks the yacht's stability when discharging the tender, requiring every yacht to pass the IMO HSC 2000 Intact stability test. Additionally all equipment – including engines, generators, stabilizers, pumps and more -- are rigorously tested for performance and durability. Once the yacht has passed the entire dry dock testing, she is taken on a sea trial with a Horizon service team to review all systems on board, the safety, and overall quality.
